What is vasopneumatic compression?

Vasopneumatic compression — also called intermittent pneumatic compression, and familiar from brands like NormaTec — uses inflatable boots or sleeves that fill with air in a sequential, wave-like pattern, squeezing from the far end of the limb toward the body. Each wave mimics what your muscles do naturally when you walk or exercise: pumping venous blood and lymphatic fluid back toward the heart.

That matters most when the natural pump isn't working — after surgery, when you can't yet move much; after injury, when swelling has pooled; or after hard training, when metabolic byproducts make muscles feel heavy and sore.

How does it work?

Compression therapy works through simple mechanics. The external pressure limits the space available for swelling to accumulate, while the sequential inflation pattern actively drives fluid — venous blood, lymph, and the metabolic waste of exercise or injury — out of the limb. Better fluid turnover means less stiffness, less soreness-related guarding, and a limb that's more ready to move and load in the productive part of your session.

Frequently asked questions

What does vasopneumatic compression feel like?+
A firm, rhythmic squeeze that starts at the foot (or hand) and rolls up the limb, then releases and repeats. Most patients find it comfortable — many describe the post-session feeling as "lighter legs." Sessions typically run 15–30 minutes.
Is this the same as NormaTec boots?+
NormaTec is one well-known brand of intermittent pneumatic compression — the same category of device. The research we cite studies this device class, and the small-to-moderate soreness benefits apply across quality pneumatic compression systems.
Will compression fix my injury?+
No — and anyone who says otherwise is overselling. Compression reduces swelling and soreness, which clears the way for the treatments that do fix things: restored motion, progressive loading, and time. We use it as a supporting tool, and the evidence supports exactly that role.
Who shouldn’t use pneumatic compression?+
People with active blood clots or DVT, severe peripheral artery disease, uncontrolled heart failure, active skin infection in the area, or certain other vascular conditions. Your evaluation screens for these before compression is ever applied.
How soon after surgery can I start?+
Often within the first days to weeks, depending on your surgeon’s protocol — early swelling control is when compression earns its keep. We coordinate with your surgeon’s office and fit compression into your post-op plan appropriately.
Do I need a referral, and does insurance cover it?+
No referral is needed — Idaho allows direct access to physical therapy. Compression is provided as part of your treatment session; most major plans cover the session itself, and RISE is in-network with most Idaho insurance. We’ll verify your benefits before your first visit.
